Summary :
A recent survey reveals that Indonesians are some of the top smokers in the world with 67.4 per cent of men over 15 years smoking. Gobal Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) also emphasises the high number of passive smokers, non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke.Health Minister Nafsiah Mboh said this figure shows that we have failed to protect our own people and we have defeated by tobacco industry. Each adult smoker consumes an average of almost 13 cigarettes each day. The survey team from the health ministry said an eight of adult smokers have started before the age 15. The survey using handheld electronic devices involves a total sampleof 8.994 households. Response :
This article show us a survey that remind us about there are so many people in Indonesia are smoking. We all know smoking give many bad effects in our health. Not only the active smokers get the impact, but passive smokers too. Everyday we see so many people smoke and don't care anything arround him and what he breath. Just smoke and forget about negative impacts from smoke. We know all cigarettes advertisement give warn abaout negative impact from smoking, but so many people don't care about that and still smoking. Honestly I'm so sad when I read children under 15 years old smoke and breath dangerous toxic. Maybe they just follow their friends or influenced by their community but it is so dangerous for their health, breath it since they are still a children. They don't know what will happen in their life, health and their future. I think goverment should be concern about this, and give some actions to prevent that happen again and again. We don't want any increase number of smokers again, so we must fix this from young generation. Even this survey just take a little sample and not give us fix number of smokers in Indonesia,  and only 4 country that participate in this survey, this survey can become a warning for us that so many people in Indonesia less concerned about their health and all of us should be more concerned and care about our health and people health arround us.

  1. I agree with Kezia's point of view on how this article shows that there are so many people smoking in this country (despite of the accuracy of the survey). In fact, our government claim that cigarettes is a big contributor for state fund , so they cannot do something assertive to the cigarettes company; However, Government have to pay 3 times bigger for health subsidy because there are many disease caused by cigarettes. So there are no excuse for government to not take this smoker problem seriously.

  2. I do agree with the opinion of kezia and Dhika. Smoking is not a personal problem anymore as it has affected the whole nation. At one side, the selling of cigarettes gives much income for the government. but at the other side, the cigarettes play as the chemical weapons that kill slowly and surely. Actually the government have shown acts to prevent and to reduce the number of active smokers by socializing the bad effects of cigarette to the public. But if the preventive action is not working, the Government must take the repressive action; moreover, the obligation to ensure the safety of the people is written in the opening of our constitution. Based on Dhika article, the government can make a regulation that restricts the distribution of cigarettes in this country. Of course the government should make an agreement with the producers due to this regulation. For example, the portion of the distribution can be diverted to international markets. I hope the government have the "courage" to solve this issue.

  3. yes i agree with Kezia, Dhika, and Ricky's opinions. i think the government can do something, they're paid for doing something better for this country, right? it's just, i think, our government is too weak and indecisive. we can take a look on the Americans. do you know that U.S. cigarette exports to developing countries in Asia from 1970 to 1990 rose by 300 percent? While in the domestic United States itself, because the rules are strict, cigarette consumption can be reduced down to 20 percent. i mean, if only our rules are tighter, and Indonesians' awareness of healthy lifestyle can be increased, we can reduce down the cigarette consumption as it is in the USA. People need to be smarter, and it's our task, as educated persons, to make them realize how dangerous cigarette is, to their own life and their surroundings. but, if we ourselves do smoke, what can we say to them? how can we be their role model?
